Ndunge Satellite ECD

Ndunge Satellite ECD

Let me introduce one our Satellite ECD’s, Ndunge.

Ndunge is one of two satellite ECD centres that Thanda has established in the Mtwalume community. The purpose of these satellite ECDs is to deliver access to Early Learning to the most remote corners of the community where young children lack access to ECD facilities to get them school-ready. Our satellite ECDs are modest, yet equipped with the same necessary resources and curriculum for a holistic learning experience as our flagship Imbewu ECD at the Thanda Community Centre.

A DAY AT NDUNGE SATELLITE ECD

Our bright and inspiring Ndunge classroom hosts 30 children who are split between grades 000 and 00. The daily curriculum is based around ‘Playing to Learn’ concepts and activities and gets the children familiar with the importance of routine, while demonstrating learning both inside and outside of the classroom.

The children start their morning with a bowl of warm porridge, a fun ice-breaker, and then head to their garden to water their veggies. Involving children in activities around the vegetable boxes has proven advantageous in instilling a variety of essential skills. These encompass sharing responsibilities, fostering an understanding of food and water, gaining insights into the origins of nutritious foods, and nurturing a sense of accomplishment and self-assurance as they actively contribute to the prosperous cultivation of their own sustenance. Their little garden also aims to inspire them to want to continue the legacy of growing their own food at home, since most of their guardians are a part of our Household Gardening Programme.

The morning continues with reading one of the enjoyable yet thought- provoking story books from the humble book shelve inside. These stories take the children on imaginative journeys and spark insightful conversations that lead to the expansion of their little minds. Their classroom also showcases a handmade isiZulu alphabet on the wall that they use for literacy development.

The middle of the day is filled with art activities that give the children an opportunity to express themselves creatively and develop their fine-motor skills. They also participate in fantasy play and free play that further heightens their sense of wonder and self-esteem. Their toy corner hosts all kinds of upcycled and recycled toys that encourage cooperative play.

Toward the end of their day, they enjoy a nutritious lunch meal prepared by Thanda cooks and then play a little more with their passionate teachers until it is time to go home.

Our Ndunge ECD is attestation that learning can take place anywhere and that resources for learning aren’t that far from reach. Elements such as the beautiful veggie boxes, isiZulu alphabet, and recycled toys are some examples of handmade learning tools that helped make this possible.
